Global Citizenship

Global Citizenship at South Bank Primary School

At South Bank Primary School, we believe that understanding our world and the people in it is essential for our children’s growth. Learning about global issues helps our pupils develop empathy, respect, and a sense of responsibility for the challenges facing communities far beyond their own.

From a young age, our children explore important topics like poverty, climate change, and human rights. This broadens their horizons and helps them think critically about how they can contribute to a fairer and more sustainable future.

We promote global citizenship through a variety of activities and learning opportunities:

  • Religious Education (RE) and Collective Worship: Our lessons include global themes that help pupils appreciate different faiths, cultures, and values, encouraging deeper understanding and respect.

  • Eco Club and Environmental Initiatives: Pupils from all year groups participate in our Eco Club, working on projects to reduce waste, save energy, and raise awareness about climate change. We also take part in workshops focused on protecting our planet.  We regularly visit the waste recycling plant and nuclear energy site and requested that when our extension was built it was carbon neutral.

  • Community and Global Engagement: Through the school council and other groups, pupils get involved in projects supporting both our local community and global causes. This includes fundraising for charities, community clean-ups, and participating in events like World Environment Day.

  • Educational Trips and Workshops: We organise trips and special sessions that focus on global issues such as sustainability and renewable energy, helping pupils understand their role in shaping the future.

  • Curriculum and Special Events: Global themes are woven into our teaching, and we celebrate important days like Safer Internet Day, World Earth Day, and Parliament Week to teach pupils about democracy, online safety, and their rights.

  • Charitable Activities: Our school community regularly supports local and global charities, teaching children the importance of kindness and helping others.

By taking part in these activities, our pupils learn to be confident, caring, and active global citizens who understand how their actions can make a positive difference in the world.
