What is Forest School?
Forest School is an educational philosophy rooted in nature-based learning, originating from Scandinavia. It offers South Bank Primary pupils regular, child-led outdoor experiences that foster holistic development—emotional, social, physical, and intellectual. This approach aligns closely with our school’s vision to nurture individuality, resilience, curiosity, and responsibility, preparing pupils to thrive as lifelong learners and active global citizens.
Long-Term Process
Forest School sessions are sustained over at least two school terms, allowing pupils to build a meaningful, lasting connection with the natural environment. This consistency supports our value of growth and resilience through ongoing engagement.
Nature-Centred Learning
Sessions take place in natural settings—such as local woodlands or our school grounds—helping pupils develop respect and responsibility for the environment, complementing our commitment to fostering compassion and environmental stewardship.
Holistic Development
The approach supports all aspects of pupil development—emotional well-being, social skills, physical health, and intellectual curiosity. This complements our priority of enhancing personal development and well-being, especially for our diverse pupil cohort including those with SEND and EAL.
Supported Risk-Taking
Pupils are encouraged to take safe, supported risks during activities, which builds confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience—key attributes within our school values.
Qualified Leadership
Forest School sessions are led by trained practitioners who ensure safety while facilitating rich learning experiences, reflecting our leadership priority to provide high-quality, inclusive education.
Community and Collaboration
The approach fosters teamwork and social interaction, supporting our vision of a safe, inclusive community where individuality and collaboration thrive.
Enhanced Self-Esteem and Confidence
Through exploration and overcoming challenges outdoors, pupils develop resilience and a strong sense of self-worth, critical for our SEND and PPG pupils.
Improved Social Skills
Collaborative tasks improve communication and teamwork, supporting our inclusive ethos and the development of responsible, respectful citizens.
Connection to Nature
Regular outdoor learning deepens pupils’ understanding of sustainability and climate resilience, linking directly to the DfE’s climate education strategy and our commitment to preparing pupils as global citizens.
Physical Development
Active engagement in outdoor play promotes motor skills and overall physical health, complementing our personal development curriculum focus on mental and physical well-being.
Implementing Forest Schools at South Bank Primary supports our school improvement priorities by enhancing curriculum intent and personal development, providing rich, sequenced learning experiences that build knowledge, skills, and character in line with the OFSTED framework.
