British Values

At South Bank Primary School, we recognise the vital importance of preparing our children for life in modern Britain by promoting core values that reflect the diversity and inclusivity of 21st century British society.

The fundamental British values we uphold are: mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, democracy, the rule of law, and individual liberty. These values are embedded and reinforced throughout our school community in many meaningful ways.

At South Bank, we strive to nurture an environment where every child is valued for their individuality and encouraged to develop curiosity, resilience, compassion, responsibility, and a growth mindset. We foster respect, kindness, and consideration among pupils, parents, governors, and staff alike. Our community learns collaboratively, creating a safe and inclusive space that nurtures the whole child and helps each pupil realise their full potential.

Our personal development curriculum, alongside weekly assemblies, class reflections, and well-being activities, supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural growth. We work closely with families, local faith groups, and community partners to build strong relationships that extend beyond the school gates.

Within our curriculum, pupils study a broad range of world faiths and cultures, alongside their own beliefs, to deepen their understanding and respect for diversity. We invite visitors from different backgrounds and organise visits to places of worship to enrich pupils’ experiences and promote tolerance.

In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils explore themes of democracy, law, and social responsibility through our PSHE and RSE programmes. For example, older pupils engage with topics such as anti-social behaviour and their role in shaping society, culminating in presentations that share their learning with the wider school community.

Our classrooms promote independence and informed decision-making. At the start of each year, pupils collaborate with teachers to establish class rules, understanding their purpose and the importance of following them to maintain a positive learning environment.

Assemblies and curriculum-linked discussions regularly address current affairs and social issues relevant to our diverse community, including equality, justice, mental health, and global citizenship. These help pupils develop a well-rounded, informed perspective on the world around them.

Our pupil voice groups are democratically elected, giving pupils a voice in school decisions. Additionally, our peer support programme trains pupils to be Friendship Builders who help resolve playground conflicts, fostering a culture of empathy and support.

Pupils at South Bank are actively involved in charitable activities, understanding the impact of their contributions on those less fortunate. Through fundraising efforts, we support local and global causes, reinforcing our values of compassion and responsibility.

We also have a dedicated group of pupil volunteers who lead initiatives to support the community and raise awareness of social justice issues, embodying our vision of nurturing active, responsible citizens ready to take on the world.

At South Bank Primary we actively challenge children, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British and Human Values, including those expressing ‘extremist or extreme’ views.
