South Bank Primary School is committed to ensuring all our pupils feel safe and well cared for and to providing a secure and safe school environment for learners, staff, parents, carers, families and other visitors.
The safeguarding of children and young people is the responsibility of all adults. In South Bank Primary this includes staff employed by the school, PFI staff, supply staff, staff commissioned or contracted from external services & agencies, volunteers, governors, parents/carers, and extended family members.
We all have a responsibility to ensure that children and young people feel safe and well at all times.
Within school this means that all aspects of the environment ensure that a child feels able to learn and develop in a safe environment. In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all practitioners ensure their approach is child-centred. This means that they consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child and be aware that children includes everyone under the age of 18.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:
Our designated school lead is Miss Cooper (Head of school) and we have two deputy safeguarding leads Mrs Burgess (Deputy Head & SENDCo) and Mrs Clarke (Safeguarding, Attendance & Pastoral Lead).
All staff at South Bank Primary School undergo a thorough, safer recruitment and vetting process. We have a Safeguarding Team which consists of:
What to do if you think a child may be at risk of abuse or neglect
Keeping children safe is all our responsibility. Members of the public, as well as staff in helping agencies, can play a vital role in helping to protect children from abuse or neglect.
Whilst the child’s welfare is always the most important consideration, there is also a duty on professionals to work in partnership with parents, to provide support where necessary and to ensure that children remain with their families wherever possible.
If any member of the public thinks a child may be at risk of abuse or neglect, they should contact the local Children’s Services (formerly known as Social Services) or the NSPCC
If you are worried about a child please visit http://www.teescpp.org.uk/ for more information about how to report your concerns.

Operation Encompass is the implementation of key partnership working between Cleveland Police, Local Authorities and nominated ‘Key Adults’ in schools. It aims to address an identified shortcoming in the early sharing of information with schools to enable the provision of timely care and support for the innocent and often silent victims of domestic abuse – the children.
This initiative has been launched across Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland in October 2015.
If you would like some more information about how Operation Encompass operates and the benefits of it please read the attached letter or you can view online at: https://www.cleveland.police.uk/advice-information/OperationEncompass.aspx
