Supporting Your Child’s Online Safety and Wellbeing

In today’s world, children live their lives both on and offline, which brings many exciting opportunities but also new challenges and risks. At South Bank Primary School, we are committed to helping pupils understand how to use the internet and technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly.

Our online safety teaching is part of the wider curriculum and whole-school approach to ensure pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently and securely.

    What We Teach

As part of statutory relationships and health education, pupils learn about:

    • What positive, healthy, and respectful online relationships look like.
    • How their actions online can affect others.
    • How to recognise and show respectful behaviour when using digital technology.

This teaching is age-appropriate and relevant to your child’s experiences, helping them understand how to stay safe and behave well online.

    Curriculum Connections

Online safety is integrated into several areas of learning:

    • Computing: Pupils learn the principles of online safety throughout their school years, with content that develops as they grow older to reflect the increasing risks they may face. This includes how to use technology safely and where to go for help if they have concerns.
    • Citizenship and Personal Development: Pupils explore important ideas such as freedom of speech, media responsibility, democracy, rights, and responsibilities, which all link to understanding how to behave and communicate online.

We also use resources like the Educate Against Hate teaching pack to support learning about fundamental values and respectful behaviour.

    Our Approach

The online world is constantly changing, with new devices, apps, and trends emerging all the time. Instead of focusing only on the latest technology, we teach core knowledge and behaviours that help pupils stay safe and confident no matter what platform or device they use.

This learning happens through a mix of:

    • Lessons across different subjects.
    • Dedicated online safety sessions.
    • Whole-school activities and initiatives.

We ensure all teaching is appropriate for your child’s age and stage of development.
